First off, we’d like to wish everyone a happy new year. It’s amazing how fast the past one went by. After my initial issues with the 330, things went from bad to worse.
First I had to remove the turbo kit from the 330. So that car is mostly-stock, with a insanely over-spec’d fuel pump, return style fuel-system and a completely stock engine.
My day job as a systems administrator got turned upside down when I was put on a brand new project to lead in an area that I had minimal experience. Things are now well, but the first few months were chaos.
I then found out the M3 needs some suspension work to fix a clunking sound - unfortunately on the order of multiple thousands of dollars. Thankfully the car is safe to drive, so that hasn’t been done yet.
After those issues, I received a support request from one of the kits we sold - in Australia. Turns out there are some differences between the 997.1 and the 997.2 GT3s. We got it mostly under control, but the entire experience was a bit stressful. As a result of this, you’ll note the distinct lack of updates on this page. That’s because I originally started this business becuase it was a challenge and it was fun. The support side took a much larger toll than I expected. As a result, there was no real active development in 2019 aside from chasing down these bugs.
In July I also purchased a house, which added to the craziness. So while I haven’t written much here, there’s been a lot going on.
The M3 is now giving me an intermittent SMG error related to gear position sensor, and not initially going into 1st gear. Yet more things to fix.
That was 2019. Phew.
Looking forward to 2020, we have a solution to the support issue. We are now partnering with Calibrated Performance to provide support, as well as collaborating on firmware fixes and changes. Daniel, the owner, is a smart gentleman and we actually had some intersecting problem areas so it made sense for us to combine our efforts. I look forward to seeing what we can do together!
The priority list for Drobnak Software for 2020 is the following:
- BMW 330 torque-based firmare with support for SMG/SSG gearbox.
- BMW M3 torque-based firmware with support for SMG gearbox.
- Additional development on our Porsche firmware packages.
